New ReIease Reviews For IDW Publishing, for 2 January, 2013

Article first published as IDW Publishing - New Release Reviews For January 2, 2013 on Technorati.

It's a brand new year of comic books from IDW Publishing, and one of their properties is all over the news of late. The Star Trek franchise (collected edition reviewed below) has been generating all sorts of buzz. First was the release of the trailer for the next movie. Next was hints that Easter Eggs about the movie are hidden in the comic book.

Lastly, there were reports that were in keeping with the holiday spirit.  A patient dealing with the last months of terminal cancer was treated to a special, preview screening of the unfinished film. Kudos to the filmmakers for doing something special for fans. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.

Godzilla : The Half Century War - Issue 4 (of 5)

This series is as much about the giant monster as it is about one man and the effects of a war that last for decades. It's a war he can't win and has become marginalized in. It spends a lot of time focusing on how technology seems to be dehumanizing.

What was very cool was the sudden dynamic shifts for characters. The art is excellent and the cover is amazing.

Score: 8.5 out of 10

My Little Pony - Issue 2

Fun. This continues to be a fun series that should really be geared more to preteen girls but apparently people of all ages and genders are fans. The conflict continues to be amusing, with very minor peril. The artwork is pleasing with bright colors.

And, for some reason the publisher continues to offer over a dozen variant covers. The Doctor Who and Lord Of The Rings homages were amusing.

Score: 7 out of 10

Doctor Who Season 3 - Issue 4

What was most interesting about this issue was all the insight given into the TARDIS and how it behaves. Otherwise, this is just a normal fun Doctor Who story. It's a light and breezy story with little peril and a touch of hand-wringing by Rory. The covers are a mixed bad and the interior artwork is adequate.

Score: 7 out of 10

G.I. Joe Cobra - Issue 20

This series rocks. Conflict abounds around every corner. Even when it should. Everything goes sideways for the team as they go on a crazy dangerous mission, and stumble badly.

The foreshadowing is ominous as they turn to the most unlikely ally. The artwork is cool and hip. The story riveting.

Score: 9 out of 10

Mars Attacks : Popeye - One Shot

The creative team did an excellent job in meshing these two classic creative concept. The artwork matched things quite well and the story meshed two fairly different concepts rather well. In the end, the Martians were more of a prop than a real threat.

Score: 6 out of 10

Judge Dredd Brian Bolland - Collected Edition

This collection is dedicated to work of Art Monkey Brian Bolland on the classic comic books series Judge Dredd. The most obvious thing that jumps out at readers is the artwork as Bollan is a phenomenally talented artist.

Characters are expertly rendered with extremely expressive facial features. Even though the stories are black and white, still as awesome as the color covers included. The vast majority of the stories were written by John Wagner and most were solid.

Score: 9 out of 10

Danger Girls Danger Sized Treasury Edition Volume Three - Collected Editon

This edition collects issues six and seven of the original series. It's a dramatic and exciting series, filled with fun. It's silly. The action is over the top with cliched villains and goofy behavior by the heroes. The sexuality int he story is beyond overt but that seems to be half the appeal. Probably more appealing to fans of the series than new readers.

Score: 6 out of 10

Star Trek Volume Three - Collected Edition

This editions collects issues 9 - 12. It has a moody, and dramatic cover brilliantly designed by Tim Bradstret. It is an exciting and fun story that hints at some bigger, broader story-lines that elevate it to something more enjoyable. An excellent series.

Score: 8.5 out of 10
