New Release Reviews For Dark Horse Comics, for 2 January, 2013

Article first published as Dark Horse Comics - New Release Reviews For January 2, 2013 on Technorati.

New Release Reviews would like to welcome you into 2013. And as last year closed out, big news came out about a certain wall-crawler over at Marvel Comics. Spider-man was dramatically eliminated by Doctor Octopus.  This generated much main-stream media attention as pundits and people on the street expressed indignation over his passing.

However, any long term comic book fan with even the simplest memory knows no one seems to die in comics so it's only a matter of time when there are a bunch of stories about the return of Peter Parker. Until then, Dark Horse has some awesome comic books out this week. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted

Hellboy : In Hell - Issue 2

There is no holding back, now. All kinds of big answers are revealed and major mysteries have been solved. This is the real deal. It's huge for all fans of this universe.

The story us fantastic. The artwork is amazing. Mike Mignola is back in full form and this comic book is out of control.

Score: 10 out of 10

47 Ronin - Issue 2

If ever a classic story could have relevance in this day and age, 47 Ronin would do that. A sad tale, overflowing with nobility, focuses on the timeless sense of corruption and the powerful bullying the weak.

Even if the source is foreign to Western readers, its heart is universal. The cover and and interior artwork are fantastic.

Score: 9 out of 10

Star Wars Purge : The Tyrant's Fist - Issue 2 (of 2)

This mini-series is alright. The weakest part is the story, that focused on a brief moment in time where Darth Vader grew a bit. Along the way, it introduced a character that had a lot of potential but ended up being rather bland. However, the cover was excellent and the interior artwork was solid.

Score: 6 out of 10

Willow - Issue 3

This is a very introspective and talky issue. Really, no issue of this series has been very exciting but that doesn't mean there hasn't been conflict.

Willow is forced to examine the choices she's making and only one person seems to have her best interest in mind. The cover is stunning. The interior art is excellent.

Score: 7 out of 10

Colder - Issue 3

Many, many answers are provided as the leads' back-stories are revealed. Revelations abound as walls between worlds seem to be crumbling. The issue's cliffhanger is almost disappointing. The interior artwork is as magnificent as the cover. Both are detailed and disturbing.

Score: 7.5 out of 10

Grendel Omnibus Volume Two : The Legacy - Collected Edition

The edition collects the series Devil's Child, Devil's Legacy, The Devil Inside, and Devil Tales. Devil's Child is phenomenally well drawn by Tim Sale with painted coloring. It is a haunting follow-up to the series that started it all.

Devil's Legacy was as memorable for its stylish artwork as how it continues the mythos, and by it's violence. Devil Inside is hip and meditative. Devil Tales has a remarkably inventive look and feel to it.

Score: 9 out of 10

Orchid Volume Two
- Collected Edition

This collected edition begins with nuanced cover that represents many of the themes of the series including violence, sex, oppression, and misogyny. The collection reads better than the individual issues as more time is able to be focused the story's commentary.  It's a very violent story but it resonates with significance.  The artwork moves things well and is pretty clear on what's going on.

Score: 7.5 out of 10

Buffy The Vampie Slayer Season Eight Volume Three
- Collected Edition

This collection reprints issues from Season Eight. Much like the current Season Nine, everything is pretty much perfect. The stories flow naturally from the television show. The humor pops and the dialogue is spot on. The artwork is excellent and the covers are outstanding. There's some excellent meta-content with many pop culture references that skewer the subject.

Score: 8.5 out of 10

It's been one week since the Return Of Peter Parker storyline began and already Dark Horse has significantly outclassed Marvel's releases.  Whether it was the Buffy The Vampire Slayer content, the Grendel collection, 47 Ronin, or Hellboy, they're having an awesome week.
